Setting the Seals

I’m mostly blogging this one for reference for myself for future use. My copy of Making Talismans: Living Entities of Power by Nick Farrell arrived today and naturally I skipped right to the Neo-Pagan chapter. I know I’m so predictable. Nick normally includes a section or chapter aimed at the neopagan market in each of his books, theres no denying the pagans and magicians tend to have different styles when comes to magic and sure enough there are some who practice both forms. I’d be happy to review the book in more detail at a later stage (I have a lot on right now) but first a technique I’d like to share.
Setting the Seals
Setting the Seals is a neo-pagan replacement for the Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. It is non-Qabalistic in nature and so does not rely on the express belief in a Supreme Deity or One. The template works of the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram but without the Christian references that tend to formulate blockages for many.
  1. Stand in the East. Trace the power symbol of your deity. See it glowing and vibrating before you. Say: “By the power of [state symbol] of [state deity], I seal the wards of the East.
  2. With your finger extended, go to the South. Trace the power symbol of your deity. See it glowing before you. Say: “By the power of [state symbol] of [state deity], I seal the wards of the South.
  3. With finger extended, go to the West. Trace the power symbol of your deity. See it glowing before you. Say: “By the power of [state symbol] of [state deity], I seal the wards of the West.
  4. With finger extended, go to the North. Trace the power symbol of your deity. See it glowing before you. Say: “By the power of [state symbol] of [state deity], I seal the wards of the North.
  5. Return to the East, complete the circle. Then stand in the middle of the Circle. Visualise the four symbols linked together by a thread of blue light. Then say: “In this place, by the power of [state deity’s name], may the four winds/elements/powers be at peace. May Earth, Wind, Fire and Water (Rain) be harmoniously joined by the Light of Love.
  6. Chant deity’s name three times and as you do so imagine diamond light extending from your heart centre and filling the space you have created. Then say: “Let it be so/So Mote it Be!

I’ve heard of other groups using Setting the Seals to formulate a ritual circle but hadn’t really understood what they’d meant. Its not really very different than what most pagans practice anyway but least I know what name to call it other than simply calling it Casting Circle.
